Forum: sflan Subject: tech status note

thanks to jim shankland, who is helping with some of the software etc. clif and ralf are out burning in the desert, and will be back in better contact in a week or so.

here is jim's note:
(1) I changed the IP addresses for sflan{1,2,4,5} today, and moved
them onto the sflan interface in building 116. That moves these
nodes off the building 116 office LAN, and outside of the Archive's
(relatively lenient) firewall. All the nodes except sflan7 are
now on the sflan address block (209.237.240.128/25), and I'll fix
sflan7 tomorrow.

(2) All the nodes have updated DNS entries as sflan.sflan.org.
Currently, for all nodes, the IP address for sflan is
209.237.240.130+ -- e.g., sflan5 is at 209.237.240.135 -- however,
I wouldn't count on that being the case forever. That's why there's
DNS. woody is the DHCP server for all of SFLAN.

(3) The layer 2 tunnel between 60 Federal and building 116 was down
yesterday, for unknown reasons. When that happens, most of sflan goes
down, which is bad. In the next day or two, I'll be adding monitoring
to make sure the tunnel stays up.

(4) Has the root password changed on woody? I can't seem to get in.
If somebody who knows the password could call me at (925) 254-6209
and let me know, I'd appreciate it.

(5) Currently we have 15 nodes (1 through 16, except for 3, which
had to come down off the Presidio tower). If the ping test I just
ran is credible, then nodes 6, 9, 12, 15, and 16 are down. If
anybody knows anything about why they're down and what plans
are in progress to get them back up, please let me know (either
email or phone), and I'll put a list together.
